22,976 people fined for not wearing masks in Mumbai, Rs 45.95 lakh collected as fine | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: A total of 22,976 people were fined for not wearing masks on Monday. Various authorities including the BMC and police collected Rs 45.95 lakh as fine.
There was a major surge in the number of people fined for not wearing masks.
Fines for not wearing masks were imposed by BMC, Mumbai police, Central and Western Railway. On February 21, 14,100 people were fined and Rs. 28 lakhs was collected as fine while on February 20 16,154 people were fined for not wearing masks and sum of R. 32 lakh was collected.
The BMC has collected Rs 60 lakh as fine over the weekend. From Monday even the police started issuing challans to those not wearing masks.
With the rise in Covid-19 cases in the city and several people lowering their guard, the BMC has once again intensified its drive to fine those who are not wearing masks. According to BMC data, the civic body is fining around 13,000 people a day and collecting over Rs 25 lakhs in fines on an average per day. So far the BMC has caught over 15 lakh persons for not wearing a mask and collected Rs 30.5 crores in fines since March 2020.
Civic officials said that they also asked some offenders to do community services, like sweeping the street, as they didn’t have money to pay the penalty.
