BMC collects Rs 60 lakhs in fines over weekend from those not wearing masks | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The BMC fined 14,100 people for not wearing masks and Rs 28 lakhs was collected as fine on Sunday. This was slightly down from the 16,154 people fined for not wearing masks on Saturday where the BMC collected Rs 32 lakh in fines. The BMC has collected Rs 60 lakhs in fines over the weekend.
To verify if there is indeed a change in people’s habit in a day, India Today went to three different locations in Mumbai, Bandra, Dadar and Prabhadevi. We spoke to frontline workers who observe and take action against citizens who don’t wear masks.
From Monday even the police started issuing challans to those who were not wearing masks.
With the rise in Covid-19 cases in the city and several people lowering their guard, the BMC has once again intensified its drive to fine those who are not wearing masks. According to BMC data, the civic body is fining around 13,000 people a day and collecting over Rs 25 lakhs in fines on an average per day. So far the BMC has caught over 15 lakh persons for not wearing a mask and collected Rs 30.5 crores in fines since March 2020.
Civic officials said that they also asked some offenders to do community services, like sweeping the street, as they didn’t have money to pay the penalty.
