Congress launches drive to tell people its 5 guarantees for Assam | Assam Election News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee launched its grassroots campaign on Thursday to make the people aware about the five guarantees the party has given to the people of Assam. Called ‘Congressor 5 Guarantee Yatra’, the campaign was flagged off by AICC general secretary and Assam in-charge, Jitendra Singh, at Paschim Nagaon near Jagiroad town. Present with him were campaign committee chairman Pradyut Bordoloi and manifesto committee chairman Gaurav Gogoi, who also took out a bike rally from Jagiroad to Morigaon.
If voted to power, the grand old party has pledged to scrap the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act and NRC; hike wages of tea garden workers to Rs 365 per day; generate five lakh government jobs; provide free electricity up to 200 units per household; and provide a Rs 2,000 monthly income support to all homemakers. Of these, the guarantee given to tea garden workers will be fulfilled within 30 days of Congress assuming office.
These guarantees had been announced by party’s national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Tezpur during her recent visit. The party’s plan is to now take the message to all constituencies of Assam, just like its other campaign of ‘Axom Bosaon Ahok’ (Come, let’s save Assam), which is a bus yatra. The idea is to tell the people how BJP’s charge that the Congress has betrayed them is false and what the grand old party can do for them. “The worst fate that the people suffer is when their dreams don’t turn into reality due to the dishonesty of the government,” Bordoloi said.
He added that Congress isn’t making empty promises like other parties but giving guarantees. And only after working out the logistics has the party concluded that it’s possible to generate five lakh government jobs and another 25 lakhs in the private sector. Bordoloi also lauded the role of homemakers, calling them the backbone of every family.
Singh and Gogoi later visited Haleswar Temple in Tezpur and flagged off the second leg of the yatra. They then visited Noorbari tea estate, where Singh highlighted the plight of tea garden workers and promised to hike wages.
Gogoi talked about how the people have been suffering due to rising inflation and estimated that 200 units of free electricity would help every household save about Rs 1,400 per month. He also promised to pass new legislation to scrap CAA and NRC when Congress is voted to power.
