‘Drunk’ Uttarakhand man lynched for entering temple | Dehradun News – Times of India

RUDRAPUR: A man walked into a religious ceremony. Something about his demeanour made those attending the Harinam Sankirtan believe he was drunk. Indignant outrage spilled over and a group of men beat up the man mercilessly — once inside the temple and, again, outside where he lay writhing in pain. Within hours, he died.
Johnny Sagar, 29, lived in Rudrapur. “On Tuesday, around 2pm, my husband had left home for some work and had gone to a temple in the area where we live. A religious ceremony was on,” his wife Sudha Rani said in a complaint to the police on Tuesday. A group of men charged at him, accusing him of being drunk. “First, they beat him up inside the pandal set up for the ceremony. Then, they dragged him out and beat him up again. He was badly injured.”
“The body was sent for an autopsy on Wednesday. The report suggested Sagar died of injuries. We have initiated a probe and are examining the CCTV footage from inside the temple premises as well to identify the accused,” said SHO of Rudrapur city police station NN Pant. The postmortem report did not say he was intoxicated. SP (city) Mamta Vohra added, “An FIR for murder has been lodged against unidentified accused.”
In CCTV footage from a grocery store opposite the temple, a man can be seen dragging Johnny out of the pandal and thrashing him when he manages to sit up. Sagar managed to walk away. But metres ahead, he collapsed and lay unconscious for two hours. The men who had beaten him up had joined the prayers again. Sudha obtained the CCTV footage and filed four clips with the police as evidence.
After a while, onlookers noticed he had stopped moving. They called an ambulance and someone informed his family. He was taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru District Hospital in a critical state. He was declared dead on arrival by the doctors at the hospital.
