Navjot Singh Sidhu, Congress’s new captain of Punjab, starts consolidating support | Ludhiana News – Times of India

JALANDHAR: After meeting most of the party MLAs and ministers in the last two days, with the reception he has received from party workers and local leaders on his way to Amritsar, newly-appointed Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu has managed to consolidate his position among party cadres.
Some party functionaries claim that energy has also started following among cadres as the organisational functioning of the party remained in inertia after Congress president Sonia Gandhi had dissolved Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and district committees in January 2020, and a meeting of the PPCC coordination committee was never held.

Scores of party workers gathered at Khatkar Kalan to welcome Sidhu and same was the scene at Phagwara and Jalandhar. While Congress workers were demoralised not only due to the inertia, infighting and uncertainty over leadership but also due to the fact that Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal had managed to activate his cadres first by severing ties with BJP on the three central farm laws. SAD and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) tie up further helped the opposition party.

Congressmen also feared Aam Aadmi Party gaining out of frustration with both the big parties. “Further erosion in support case can be arrested with Sidhu’s appointment. Biggest issue is to galvanise party workers and now signs of energy in the party cadres are visible,” said Jalandhar based Sanjay Sehgal, who remained vicechairman of RTI cell of the Punjab Congress.
With Sidhu’s trip to Amritsar, during which he repeatedly talked about Congress workers and at Khatkar Kalan talked about ‘Punjab model’ for rejuvenating the state, the battle between him and CM Amarinder Singh would now be at two levels – first at the level of MLAs and second at ground among cadres.

“For a party to win, its workers should have confidence and they should be on the offensive. With Sidhu’s first trip among people, that has started happening,” claimed a Congress MLA.
Sidhu injures his foot:
Sidhu’s right foot thumb nail was completely plucked during the public gathering at Khatkar Kalan. His close associate said, “Thousands of people received him with open arms and showered their love. He continued his journey across the state, meeting People, MLAs and senior Congress leaders in Phagwara, Jalandhar and was received by more than 20,000 people in Amritsar, as he kept his commitment to people with a bleeding foot for hours.”
Farmers protest during visit:
Members of Kirti Kisan Union and Doaba Kisan Union had gathered at Khatkar Kalan to ‘question’ Sidhu. They started raising slogans. However, police held them at bay. After Sidhu left, they blocked the Phagwara-Chandigarh highway for close to an hour, causing pain to commuters.
Hold protests: Party to cadres:
Even as there is still no announcement pertaining to Sidhu’s official installation ceremony at Congress Bhawan in Chandigarh, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal issued a letter asking Congress state units to hold press conferences and protest marches to the Raj Bhawans against the “illegal hacking of cell phones.”
