Two cops held for theft inside West Godavari police station | Vijayawada News – Times of India

ELURU: Two police constables were arrested for allegedly stealing money which was kept in a police station in West Godavari district. The accused constables, identified Usurumarthi Gangajalam and Gorrela Gnaneswara Rao, are accused of stealing about 8 lakh kept in the strong room of Veeravasaram police station.
It may be recalled that supervisors working in government liquor shops at Veeravasaram, Rayakuduru, Konithivada and Nauduru had deposited 8,04,330 at the police station for safekeep on March 15. The money was put in a sealed iron box and deposited in the police station as the banks were closed for four days due to holidays and strike.
However, when the supervisors went to the police station on March 17 to collect the money and deposit it in the bank, there was no money in the box. The seal of the box too was found to be removed while the lock was changed. Taking the issue seriously, West Godavari SP Narayan Nayak formed special teams to probe the case. The two accused cops were arrested on Saturday and the stolen money was also recovered from them.
Nayak said main accused Gangajalam, who joined the police force in 2013, was arrested once before last year while playing cards at Patha Pattiseema village.
